Award of the title of Honorary Doctorate of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki to Professor of EPFL, Urs von Gunten

On May 28, the Senate of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has elected the emeritus Professor of EPFL, Urs von Gunten, as Honorary Doctor of the School of Chemistry in the Faculty of Natural Sciences. We warmly congratulate Professor von Gunten on this distinction, which is a great honor for the school of Chemistry and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, since an outstanding scientist of this level will now be a member of the family of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Τhe official inauguration ceremony will take place in Autumn this year.

Professor Urs von Gunten is one of the world’s best-known scientists when it comes to the treatment of drinking water, in particular oxidation and disinfection processes. He has been conducting research at Eawag, which is thw water research institute of ETH in Zurich,  since 1989. From 2006 he was a titular professor at ETHZ, and from 2011 a full professor at EPFL. Now he is retiring. He retains a consultancy mandate… and the freedom to critically scrutinise the narrative of Switzerland’s leading role in research. You can read more here.

The 2nd edition of Research.com ranking of the best universities in the field of Chemistry is based on data consolidated from a wide range of data sources including OpenAlex and CrossRef. The bibliometric data for estimating the citation-based metrics were acquired on 21-12-2022. Position in the ranking is based on a sum of D-indexes (Discipline H-index) of all ranking scientist’s affiliated with a given institution. D-index only includes publications and citation values for an examined discipline.

Ten Years of Impact: The Analytical Scientist Power List returns to celebrate the successes of the field’s leading lights! In the spirit of the journal’s recent 10-year anniversary, nominees were assessed for their excellence and impact over the past decade – across four categories: Innovators and Trailblazers, Leaders and Advocates, Connectors and Interdisciplinarians, and Mentors and Educators. The list is created of 100 scientists (25 per category).

In this list, Greece is represented by two Professors of the Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry, School of Chemistry, AUTH, specifically by Prof. Georgios Theodoridis in the category: Connectors and Interdisciplinary and Prof. Victoria Samanidou in the category: Mentors and Educators.

Oral statement at the United Nations water conference at the UN headquarters in New York 22-24 March 2023 by Assoc. Prof. Ioannis Katsoyiannis

Ioannis Katsoyiannis, Assoc. Prof. of the Department of Chemistry at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki participated at the 2023 United Nations water conference at the UN headquarters in New York from 22 to 24 March 2023 on his capacity as the Director of the Institute of Sustainable Water Management and Water Law,of the European Public Law Organization (EPLO). Professor Katsoyiannis gave a statement about the world water situation on the third day of the conference during the general debate, in the General Assembly Hall and, stressed among others that, although big efforts have been realized, there are still hundreds of millions of people without access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation, while water scarcity is threatening the available water sources in almost all the world. In addition, chemical pollution, which is still a big problem, endangers biodiversity.
