Ioannis Katsounaros is an Associate Professor of Physical Chemistry & Electrochemistry at the Department of Chemistry, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH).

After obtaining a PhD in Chemical Engineering (2009) from AUTH, he held positions in multiple organizations in academia and industry in Germany, the United States, Belgium and the Netherlands for about 15 years, before returning to his alma mater in July 2024.

Through his different roles, he has worked on a plethora of low- and high-temperature electrochemical technologies across all scales, from lab-scale electrochemical cells to commercial stacks, from model single-crystal surfaces to application-relevant nanostructured materials, and from early-stage process conceptualization to industrial-scale deployment.

He is the author of >60 research papers which have received >10,000 citations (h-index: 41).

His research interests are in physical electrochemistry and electrocatalysis for low-carbon technologies that are relevant for the energy transition at global scale, such as:

  • Water electrolysis for the production of green hydrogen
  • Power generation in fuel cells using H2 or alternative hydrogen carriers
  • Electrochemical synthesis of renewable fuels and chemicals
  • Electrochemical CO2 capture and/or utilization
